Chehalis Downtown Youth Art Walk

Connecting Community through Youth Art

The Chehalis Youth Art Walk is a community arts program created by Experience Chehalis and Dandelion Creative Space to celebrate the creativity of local youth while bringing new cultural experiences to downtown Chehalis.

The inaugural Youth Art Walk takes place March 14–21 and features artwork created by Lewis County high school students displayed inside participating downtown Chehalis businesses. The program provides young artists with a meaningful opportunity to showcase their work publicly while connecting the community with emerging creative talent.

This new event celebrates youth creativity, fosters community engagement, and promotes diversity through the arts. After receiving more than 40 submissions, a selection committee had the challenging task of reviewing the artwork and thoughtful artist statements submitted with each entry.

Twenty artists were selected to have their work exhibited throughout downtown Chehalis during the week-long art walk.

 

Artist Reception

To celebrate the creativity and contributions of the participating artists, a community Artist Reception will kick off the event.

Community members are invited to attend the reception, meet the artists, and show their support for these talented young creators. During the reception, 1st through 5th place awards will be announced. Winning artists will receive cash prizes along with a $25 gift certificate to Book ‘n’ Brush.

Gone are the days of shopping local out of a sense of obligation or duty. Shoppers want “great experiences” in “good stores.” But what exactly makes a “good store”? This presentation will define the elements that make up a great retail landscape that supports a “Main Street” downtown district. Main Street’s advantage is its authenticity and its ability to provide unique experiences. It epitomizes the Buy Local trend that mass retailers are trying to capture for their shareholders. Main Street retail can be exactly what shoppers are yearning for.

This February 2026, Experience Chehalis invites the community to join in a heartwarming new tradition, now in its second year – Downtown Chehalis Love Notes! This initiative is all about sharing kindness and appreciation with the businesses, organizations, and employees that make downtown Chehalis special.

Throughout the month, community members can write a short note, poem, or even create a drawing for their favorite downtown shop, employee, or organization. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to spread joy and gratitude.

To participate in Downtown Chehalis Love Notes, simply stop by one of the fourteen participating businesses, pick up a love note, and take a moment to share your love for Downtown Chehalis with a heartfelt message, a thoughtful poem, or a creative drawing celebrating your favorite spot, business, or person! Once your Love Note is complete, drop it in one of the red collection boxes located at any participating location. Throughout the month, businesses will proudly display these notes in their windows, creating a beautiful visual celebration of community appreciation and kindness.

Block captains are liaisons between businesses and Experience Chehalis. This line of communication serves not only as a delivery tool for Experience Chehalis but also allows businesses to share feedback and thoughts.  

Our team of thirteen volunteer block captains visit downtown businesses to share information and news every two months, ensuring businesses and property owners are aware of promotion opportunities, information on community events, Experience Chehalis projects, and new programs to build our community.  We thank our team of dedicated block captains including Angela French, Jenna Nacht, Kate McDougall, Laura Nelson, Laura Six, Eric Sonnenberg, Stephanie Von Moos, Brian Wilkins!

Business owners can communicate any requests or concerns to block captains, who will then bring them to Experience Chehalis. Block captains also collect information on business promotions and activities and gather feedback and input.

Did you know customers in Downtown Chehalis parked in 2-hour parking zones can extend their parking to spend more time downtown?  Many businesses are not aware the City of Chehalis offers a parking extender pass in Downtown Chehalis.  Experience Chehalis is working with the City to promote this program to add more flexibility for customers downtown.  Businesses can purchase parking extender passes for $1 each to make available to customers at no charge.  This will extend customer parking for two additional hours.  The businesses with extender passes available will receive a vinyl decal to display in their window to let customers know passes are available at that location. They will also receive a supply of rack cards to share more information.   

Please keep in mind the following important details:

  • Passes must be made available to customers at no cost. These passes cannot be resold.
  • Passes can be purchased by businesses at the Chehalis Police Department at Chehalis City Hall.
  • Date and time fields on each pass MUST be completed by the business before distributing them to customers.
  • Each pass is valid for a one-time, two-hour parking extension.
  • These passes are for customer use only. They are not to be used by staff and business owners.  If a business is discovered using passes inappropriately, it could jeopardize the entire program.

 The City of Chehalis, in partnership with Experience Chehalis hopes this program will help alleviate parking concerns so customers can spend the time they need in our downtown.

Experience Chehalis offers a grant program to provide matching funds to downtown business owners who desire to make eligible small-scale improvements to the façade of their buildings for the winter holiday season. Experience Chehalis works to support and foster the health and viability of our business community, and the Holiday Façade Grant aims to encourage improvements that will enhance the physical image of the downtown as a quality place to shop, work, and live, especially during the holiday season.

The grant provides a 75 percent match, up to $350 per business, for approved costs including holiday window displays, window painting, and/or lighting in storefront displays that are visible from rights-of-way. Applications will be accepted for as long as funding is available each year. Grant awards will be first-come, first-served, and based on available funding. Applications will be reviewed and awarded by Experience Chehalis, and applications are being accepted now.

Once the pumpkins are decorated, it’s time to prepare the costumes and head to Downtown Chehalis on Halloween for trick-or-treating fun!  Trick-or-Treat Transit, hosted by the Centralia-Chehalis Chamber of Commerce, takes families throughout Chehalis and Centralia at no charge, with several stops in the Twin Cities.  The stops include the Lewis County Mall, the Lewis County Historical Museum, Twin City Town Center, and Centralia Downtown Plaza.

Once kids arrive downtown, families can enjoy local businesses offering treats for kids.  In 2023, Experience Chehalis coordinated with the Chehalis Farmer’s Market to extend their hours to open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Experience Chehalis offered treats and giveaways and an area for taking a break and coloring Halloween sheets.  The organization also coordinated with local partners and businesses to locate additional stops downtown for the day.

Experience Chehalis offers a grant program to provide matching funds to downtown business owners who host an event at their business within downtown Chehalis. Experience Chehalis works to support and foster the health and viability of our business community, and the Small Event Micro-Grant aims to encourage businesses to initiate events to increase commerce and visitors to downtown Chehalis.

The grant provides a 75 percent match, up to $500 per business for approved costs including supplies and marketing/promotion, excluding alcohol. Applications will be accepted for as long as funding is available through December 31, 2023. Grant awards will be first-come, first-served, and based on available funding. Applications will be reviewed and awarded by Experience Chehalis and applications are being accepted now.
