Historic Self-Guided Walking Tour
Walk through the doors of history and into the colorful past of our community. Pick up a Historic Walking Tour Guide at the Lewis County Historical Museum, Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Library, other Downtown Chehalis businesses, or follow along on your mobile device. Travel through decades of pioneer living and the early settlement of Chehalis. This self-guided tour features facts and stories of 40+ historic buildings scattered throughout downtown.
Our rich history is reflected in the design and architecture of both residential and commercial areas and Chehalis boasts three historic districts that are recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to our downtown district, the Pennsylvania Avenue~West Side Historic District is a well-preserved, historically significant neighborhood built by the urban elite of Chehalis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Hillside Historic District features many quaint and charming homes located in the eastern part of town.
Over 7,000 booklets have been printed since this guide was originally created in 2009. The tour booklet continues to be very popular with travelers, offering an opportunity to experience the history and beauty of our area. The majority of booklets are distributed through the Lewis County Historical Museum and in the downtown core. A mobile version of the walking tour was developed in 2013 and a QR code on the booklet directs visitors to this version of the tour online.
