The Chehalis-Centralia Railroad membership was informed at their monthly meeting on June 12, 2019 that the popular and well-loved logging locomotive will be out of service for much of the summer season. After successful runs for Valentine’s Day weekend in February, but before the Annual Easter Train in April, an inspection revealed a crack in the firebox caused by use and age.  While the locomotive, fondly referred to as the #15 was still operable, due to safety regulations it was immediately removed from service. Over the course of the past two months, more testing, measuring and inspections have provided information needed to make the necessary repairs. Professional locomotive mechanics have been hired to complete the needed repairs. Alternative methods of pulling the railroad’s excursions this summer have been considered. According to President Bill Deustcher, both time and money estimates have been difficult to determine, but the picture is becoming clearer. How long it will take and how much it will cost depends greatly on the continued availability of skilled labor. The Chehalis-Centralia Railroad Board of Directors wasted no time in finding the necessary professional help. Now the challenge is to find the dollars to cover the estimated $110,000 expense. Fundraising efforts and sponsorships are just beginning. The Board of Directors will turn over every stone and ask the community to help support this effort. Our intent and desire are to see our Steam Train excursions last for years and years to come.

The idea of renting another locomotive was considered, but the Board of Directors opted to engage their own #6 diesel engine. While some are quite disappointed at not being a Steam Train Ride, the passengers understand the need and are willing to make a sacrifice.

The all-volunteer team of members of the Railroad contribute their time to create a memorable excursion. Upgraded seating in the diner and improved gift shop and museum help create a nostalgic experience in the 1920’s coaches and open cars.

The Railroad invites friends, families and rail fans to make reservations now to join the weekend excursions every Saturday and Sunday, through August 31st.  Trains depart the Chehalis Depot (1101 SW Sylvenus Street, near the Veterans Memorial Museum) at 1:00pm, 3:00pm and 5:00pm each Saturday and 1:00 and 3:00 on Sunday. The 5:00pm Saturday excursion features the popular Dinner Train, however regular seating is also available for the extended river view run to Ruth, a former rail stop along the old Chehalis Western Train route. Non-dining passengers are encouraged to pack up a boxed lunch and join the fun in the coach or open car.  Each train features covered and open-air cars providing seating for up to 220 passengers. Parking is free and walk-ups are always welcome. Reservations are required for all Dinner Trains.

Dinner trains run each Saturday and Murder Mystery Trains the last Saturday of each month.  On July 6, there will be a special “Magic Train” featuring, Jeff Evans. This event is co-sponsored by the Twin Cities Sertoma Club. This event and more will make the summer a busy place at the local railyard in Chehalis.

A ride on the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad is a pleasant, scenic and relaxing 1-2 hour journey back into history. The excursion through the Chehalis River Valley features coaches from the 1920’s and provide indoor and outside seating. The train ride departs from the Depot located in Chehalis, 1101 SW Sylvenus Street, across from the Veteran’s Memorial Museum. The train excursion operates Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with Saturday trips through September. Special holiday events are held throughout the year. The Chehalis-Centralia Railroad hosts the only Dinner trains and Murder Mystery Dinner Trains in the region.

The Chehalis Centralia organization continues to seek support of volunteers to help with events and maintenance of the grounds and facilities. Anyone interested in joining this unique and exciting venture, please email info@SteamTrainRide.com.
